ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) ? President Barack Obama wants to shift some federal dollars away from colleges and universities that aren't controlling tuition costs to those that are. He's also proposing competitions among higher education institutions to encourage them to run more efficiently.

Obama will spell out his plans Friday during a speech at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor focused on college affordability.

On Tuesday during his State of the Union address, Obama put colleges and universities on notice to control soaring tuition costs or face losing federal dollars.

The money Obama is targeting is what's known as "campus based" aid given to colleges to distribute in areas such as Perkins loans or in work study programs. Of the $142 billion in federal grants and loans distributed in the last school year, about $3 billion went to these programs.

BearExtender PC Long Range 802.11n USB WiFi Booster

BearExtender PC is a device that addresses the number one bane of wireless networking?weak or dropped signals. This device is a wireless signal booster (or extender), but unlike many wireless extenders on the market it works on the client side rather than with a Wi-Fi router.

It's a clever, little device though it has limitations: it only works on the 2.4 GHz band and it drops the connection when it's 100 feet away from the router. It works ideally at 50-100 feet away from the wireless router and at a price of $44.97, fits into most budgets.

What It Is
BearExtender is an 802.11n long-range wireless adapter that works with Windows. The device is based on the company's earlier BearExtender n3 adapter for Macs. BearExtender's genesis arises from ?University of Berkeley students' inability to connect to the campus' wireless network named "AirBears"?hence, the BearExtender name.

The adapter is a small, flattened device with a clip?it ?resembles a miniature access point. That clip is for attaching it to a netbook to laptop. I clipped it to an iPad and the grip was quite loose. The thinner the laptop, notebook, or any other wireless client, the looser BearExtender's grip. It's also not an ideal design to attach to smartphones, though I supposed someone with enough intent could manage.

Not only does BearExtender clip onto a laptop, but it connects via USB from the mini USB port on the device to a USB port on a laptop. If clipping a device which resembles a mini access point doesn't look odd enough, there's an approximately 8-inch long external 2 dBi gain antenna that screws onto the adapter. The antenna is designed in such a way as to bypass interference from a laptop's casing. The entire contraption is sure to elicit a few curious glances in public.

Users can upgrade to a 5 dBi antenna?which is the antenna I used for testing. BearExtender PC combines two proprietary receivers with a 700mW transmitter capable of theoretical throughput speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

Setup
A setup CD is included with the device. The CD contains installation options for Windows 7, Vista, and XP as well as user manuals. I clicked the install option for Windows 7.

A message appeared on-screen before the installation process began that instructed me to only install the Ralink WAN Utility for Windows driver and not the entire software package. Apparently, BearExtender uses Ralink's chipset. Installation was simple, and you are asked to install either the Ralink utility or only the driver during the setup process. Installing Ralink's entire utility could cause some potential conflict with Windows' native wireless management, so users are wisely advised to install only the driver.

The setup instructions advise installing the driver before connecting the extender to the laptop visa USB. Once I connected the USB cable, Windows detected the device right away. Users are further instructed to disable the laptop's built-in wireless adapter.

Next, you connect to your wireless network the way you normally would. I had my connection to the router set to connect automatically which remembers the passphrase. I had to re-enter my WLAN's password once I disabled the native wireless adapter on my laptop and connected to the signal using BearExtender.

BearExtender offers many resources for user assistance if help is needed during setup. The user manual is very well written and there's telephone as well as 24/7 email support.

Performance
I measured performance using two methods at various distances. The first was a rather informal test that noted the number of signal strength bars Windows 7 displayed as I moved away from the room? both before and when I had BearExtender connected. Second, I used Ixia's IxChariot benchmark testing suite to measure throughput with and without BearExtender.

The testing equipment included a HP Elitebook 8440w which uses a 3x3 Intel Centrino 6300 AGN wireless adapter, Netgear's N600 (WNDR3700) Dual-Band Gigabit router, and an HP Proliant ML300 G6 server running Windows 2008 R2 as a second testing endpoint for throughput.

Windows 7 reported a strong, 5 bar wireless signal up until I got to 50 feet away from the router room. Signal strength then dropped to four bars. ?I was down to 4 bars of wireless strength and crawling internet at 100 feet. Beyond 100 feet, I could no longer connect to the SSID.

With BearExtender, Windows 7 reported 5 solid signal bars up until 100 feet. At 100 feet, the signal wavered between 3 and 4 bars, but the signal persisted, albeit with a slow connection. I could still see and connect to my SSID at 150 feet, but Windows was down to 3 bars with and every time I attempted to connect, my connection dropped.

Here are the throughput results from testing with and without BearExtender:

Throughout did not significantly change until I was 75 feet away from the router. As the table shows, at 75 feet, the laptop's built-in wi-fi adapter barely has a connection to the router. That gets a nice boost with BearExtender PC. Although throughput speed is not overwhelming at 75 and particularly at 100 feet, BearExender does manage to lengthen the router's signal and keep the laptop connected to the wireless network. The network became unreachable at 150 feet.

Should You Buy BearExtender?
BearExtender PC can definitely help boost a wireless signal under a few specific conditions: you are only connecting at 2.4 GHz and your signal distance does not exceed 100 feet from a router. Any greater distance than that, are you may still be facing flaky connectivity?although admittedly, I test in a very high RF interference environment.

If it's critical that you boost a wireless signal in a much larger space, best bet is to go with a traditional booster that acts more as a repeater or consider a powerline product like the Editor's Choice winning Netgear Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit (XAVB5001) which also extends a home network or Internet connection to dead zones (although not wirelessly).

The best use for BearExtender are smaller spaces with wireless clients that may just need a little extra boost to get wireless to that last bedroom down the hall or into the kitchen. The device's added bonuses are simple setup and affordability. BearExtender PC is a worthy 3 stars as a wireless extender.

J.Lo gripes at 'Idol' judges: Your hearing is bad!

Michael Becker / Fox

Judges Steven Tyler, J.Lo and Randy Jackson weren't on the same page for the first time this season on Thursday, and Lopez wasn't shy about hiding her frustration.

By Craig Berman

RECAP

?American Idol? took its show on the road to Texas for Thursday?s episode, by way of the International Space Station.

Sadly, the astronaut in charge of kicking off the show gave a conventional introduction and didn?t go with a riff on ?Star Trek.? After all, he could have said: ?Space: The final frontier. These are the voyages of the 'Idol' auditions. ?Its four-week mission: to explore strange new cities, to seek out new talent and folks who got cut in previous years, to boldly go where every ?Idol? season has gone before.?

That would have been fitting for an episode that was in turns both nostalgic and wacky. It was as filled with clich?s as any ?Star Trek? episode, complete with the egotistical folks on the bridge.

Yes, it?s true. The bickering judges were back! Finally!

After two weeks of constant 3-0 votes, we finally had an incredulous J.Lo find herself on the wrong end of a series of 2-1 decisions. She was the only supporter of Rachael Turner, Reagan Wilson and Cheyenne James, but somehow resisted the urge that all viewers felt to reach through the screen and whack Randy Jackson in the head for mocking her. But she was able to get in a dig after James sang. "If I had two people who were hearing correctly right now, they would have said yes and then we would be putting you through to Hollywood and you might make it very very far," J.Lo told the hopeful.

Then she was the only no vote for Linda Williams, a contestant notable mostly because she said she was going to pee on herself.??

?They?re sending the good singers home and they?re letting the bad singers through,??Lopez griped (accurately).

After everyone?s hair and makeup were refreshed, J.Lo said, ?I don?t wanna fight.?

Steven Tyler answered, ?Then say you?re sorry."

Here?s a tip: That never works to end an argument with a beautiful woman, as my wife could tell you because I've tried that line on her many, many times with no success.

We also got some old-school, really terrible singers. Phong Vu, for example, is a worthy heir to season three?s William Hung. He didn?t make it to Hollywood, but should contact Hung?s agent and see if he can get the same record deal that Hung got. Isn?t it about time for a new cover of ?She Bangs??

And Alejandro Cazares, who implored the judges to ?grant me the power to bring revolution to the world.? Please. They don?t have the authority to drink anything that?s not in a Coke cup. Do?you think they have the power to create a revolution?

Even the successful auditioners looked familiar. In the case of Baylie Brown, it?s because she was one of the early stars of season six as a 16-year old and made it to the group round, where one of her teammates was Antonella Barba. It doesn?t sound like she had fond memories of that, but five years later she?s back for another shot and Barba?s remembered as the girl who had risqu? pictures show up on the Internet. So maybe that was a blessing in disguise for Brown.

Skylar Laine could be this year?s Kellie Pickler. She?s the country girl who offroads and hunts deer and would be equally wacky if asked to eat sushi with Wolfgang Puck for a sketch during the finale like Pickler did. She was charming enough in her introduction to the ?Idol? voters, and could last a long time.

Then there were the traditional hard-luck cases. Kristine Osorio was the mom who bought a plane ticket to the auditions instead of paying her divorce lawyer -- good luck with that court case now. Cortez Shaw was homeless for a couple of years but sang really well and made Adele?s ?Someone Like You? into something that didn?t cause the judges to cringe.

And like every other episode, ?Idol? ended with a tearjerker. Ramiro Garcia, a worship leader whose parents were told he?d never be able to hear or speak when he was a baby, sang ?Amazing Grace? and earned a place in the next round.

Let?s just say that was a showstopper that any astronaut could have seen coming from outer space.

Was J.Lo right that Steven and Randy were sending the good singers home? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page!

Ford plant seeking reduced tax bill

By PATRICK BRENNAN TIMES-JOURNAL

Posted 4 hours ago

Elgin county and Southwold township will split legal fee costs when it comes to an appeal of an assessment ruling that reduces the amount of tax the Ford plant will pay.

The county and Southwold are jointly appealing the assessment ruling.

Jim Bundschuh, director of financial services for the county, said a resolution authorizing the move, reflects the position both the county and Southwold have always taken, but this acknowledges a legal firm is being retained.

Ford is appealing the assessment of its property in Southwold. It wants its assessment to be approximately $12.5 million, about half of the current $24 million figure.

Up until now, MTE Paralegal has been representing the county and Southwold.

"They're still retained, but there's also going to be a law firm involved," Bundschuh noted. "We're just saying yes, we agree to share the total cost."

None of the sides know now what the costs will be, Bundschuh said.

"It's going to depend on how lengthy the battle is," he said. "In the grand scheme, the legal costs are relatively small compared to the outcome. What's the result of the appeal? That's the one that's hard to budget for.

"What kind of rebate will we potentially have to give to Ford? That's the difficult one to put our heads around."

The appeal means the county won't be able to reduce its budgeted amount it would have used for tax writeoffs, Bundschuh noted.

"We now have to keep it at elevated levels," he said. "We'll see where that appeal comes out and, hopefully, we have some good news at the end. It's possible we'll be able to settle this without having to go to arbitration and that will keep the legal fees down and it's in both parties' interest to do that and only time will tell which direction we're going.

"I think in the long run, Ford is going to be reasonable."

The next meeting for all parties is scheduled for March.

Briefing on injured skier Sarah Burke abruptly canceled (Reuters)

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) ? Relatives of champion Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke, critically injured in a fall last week, abruptly canceled a news conference they had planned for Monday to provide an update on her condition.

The briefing scheduled at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City was to have been the first on Burke's medical status since she suffered a traumatic brain injury last Tuesday during a half-pipe run at Park City Mountain Resort.

The 29-year-old athlete, an early favorite to win an Olympic gold medal at the 2014 Winter Games, underwent surgery on Wednesday but as of Friday doctors said she remained in critical condition with an uncertain prognosis.

On Monday, reporters who gathered at the hospital for a formal update were handed a statement from her family instead.

It said her husband and fellow skier, Rory Bushfield, and other members of the family met on Sunday night with physicians "to discuss the results of Sarah's most recent neurological tests and assessments."

"Based on the information they received, we regret to inform you that they have decided to cancel today's press conference in order for further tests to be conducted this morning and in the coming days," the statement said.

The family asked that the media "respect their privacy" and said future updates would be released via Burke's website, www.sarahburkeski.com.

Few details have been released about the accident.

Peter Judge, chief executive of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association, said she was not attempting a new trick or "anything out of the norm" at the time of her spill.

Burke, considered one of the world's leading half-pipe skiers and an ambassador for her sport, has reached the podium at every career World Cup start and is a four-time champion at the X-Games.

She was expected to be a top contender for the gold medal when freestyle half-pipe makes its debut at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Newt Gingrich is defending his aggressive attacks on GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, saying the tough questions about his record need to be raised during the Republican primaries.

Speaking Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," Gingrich said Republicans must make sure they don't nominate a candidate who collapses in September "under the weight of Barack Obama."

He says the president is expected to spend a billion dollars on his re-election campaign and the GOP has to be able to withstand what he calls the "Obama onslaught."

Gingrich says Romney's record as a former governor of Massachusetts is more moderate than Romney advertises and he needs to "get straight" with voters.

Gingrich says Republicans in South Carolina, which holds its presidential primary next Saturday, would be uncomfortable with Romney as the nominee.

November trade gap widens, biggest since June (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The trade deficit widened in November to its largest in five months, suggesting imports weighed on economic growth a bit more than expected during the fourth quarter.

The trade gap totaled $47.8 billion, exceeding analysts' forecast of a $45.0 billion deficit, Commerce Department data showed on Friday.

The government revised its initial estimate for October's trade deficit slightly lower to $43.3 billion.

The trade report "is important for fourth-quarter GDP and this data should bring those (growth) expectations down," said Jacob Oubina, an economist at RBC Capital markets in New York.

Imports rose 1.3 percent to $225.6 billion as Americans bought more industrial supplies from abroad and spent more on foreign oil. It was the biggest increase in imports since May, according to seasonally adjusted figures.

The average price for imported oil rose to $102.50 per barrel, up 3.7 percent from October, while the volume of oil imports also rose.

However, a separate report from the Labor Department showed a drop in oil prices during December pushed down overall import prices during that month, suggesting the trade gap could get some relief at the end of the year.

<^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Graphic for U.S. import/export prices: http://link.reuters.com/can95s

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^>

Also, November's data on imports gave some positive signals for the economy. Imports of capital goods, which are used in domestic workplaces, climbed to a record high.

U.S. financial markets showed little reaction to the trade data. Stock futures were weaker, while Treasury debt prices were up as traders focused on developments in Europe.

Trade perennially weighs on U.S. economic growth. A wider deficit shows that more goods and services bought by U.S. businesses and consumers were produced outside the country, subtracting from gross domestic product.

In November, exports fell 0.9 percent to $177.8 billion.

Earlier in his administration, President Barack Obama pledged to double U.S. exports within five years and on Friday he plans to ask Congress for authority to merge the agency that negotiates U.S. trade deals into the Commerce Department.

Just as higher imports might be a sign of increasing consumer demand within the country, the drop in exports might reflect the recent cooling in the global economy.

With the unemployment rate declining and factory output holding strong, U.S. economic growth likely accelerated in the fourth quarter even as the global economy grappled with Europe's debt crisis, which likely plunged the euro zone into recession at the end of last year.

The report also gave a hint of a modest improvement in the politically charged trade imbalances between the United States and China.

The trade deficit with China narrowed to $26.9 billion in November, with American exports to the Asian giant rising to $9.9 billion, according to figures that are not seasonally adjusted.

U.S. exports to China were the highest since December 2010, while imports fell.

EPA: NY should map gas wells, set radiation limits (AP)

ALBANY, N.Y. ? The Environmental Protection Agency says New York regulators should set limits for radioactive materials in gas-drilling wastewater sent to public treatment plants before allowing any hydraulic fracturing of natural gas wells in the state.

The federal agency made that suggestion and others related to radiation from gas-drilling activities in 44 pages of comments submitted Wednesday night on the state Department of Environmental Conservation's proposed rules for high-volume hydraulic fracturing.

DEC Commissioner Joe Martens said Wednesday that the state agency received an unprecedented number of comments on its environmental review, which began in 2008. DEC spokeswoman Emily DeSantis said Thursday that 32,100 comments have been tallied so far and the number is expected to exceed 40,000 when all are counted.

The EPA is conducting its own review of high-volume hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," which releases gas from deep shale formations by injecting wells with chemically treated water at high pressure to break up surrounding rock. Initial research results of the EPA study, which focuses on the vast amount of fresh water used and wastewater produced by fracking, will be released this year.

In its comments on DEC's study, the federal agency recommends that the DEC develop a Geographic Information System-based display that shows the location of permitted gas wells and update it at least monthly with the stage of operations on each site. The publicly accessible map should also show public water wells and intakes, EPA said.

Environmental groups, some of which have called for a ban on fracking instead of regulations, say the activity is a threat to drinking water supplies. DEC's proposed rules would ban hydraulic fracturing in the watersheds of New York City and Syracuse, an exclusion supported by EPA.

The industry, citing a long history of problem-free drilling in watersheds and through aquifers, says the state's rules are unnecessarily restrictive.

One of the biggest problems related to a boom in gas development in the Marcellus Shale formation underlying parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia is how to dispose of the millions of gallons of polluted wastewater produced by fracking. Municipal water treatment plants aren't designed to remove some of the contaminants found in the wastewater, including radioactive elements.

While the state's review says flowback water coming out of fracked wells is not expected to contain significant levels of naturally occurring radioactive materials, EPA pointed out its own data from six natural gas companies in Pennsylvania that show elevated levels of radioactive materials in wastewater.

EPA advises that DEC sets a limit for radioactivity in drilling wastewater sent to treatment plants. It also notes that both EPA and DEC have to approve a treatment plant's analysis of natural gas wastewater before the waste is accepted for disposal. The analysis must include identification of any potential effects on the plant's operations.

The federal agency noted that some of the out-of-state treatment plants listed by DEC as potential disposal sites for gas drilling wastewater would be unable to handle New York's wastewater.

EPA also recommends that DEC prohibit the spreading of all gas well wastewater on roads for de-icing because the liquid would have elevated levels of contaminants, including radioactive elements.

Environmental groups criticized the DEC document for its lack of a definite plan for disposal of wastewater.

Permitting for shale gas wells has been on hold since the DEC review began in 2008, and won't be issued until after all the comments are considered and taken into account in a final document, likely later this year.

Romney jumps ahead of Republicans, trails Obama: Poll (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has sailed ahead of rival Republican candidates nationally but still trails President Barack Obama in the White House race, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Tuesday.

Thirty percent of Republicans in the poll would vote for Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, compared to 18 percent a month ago.

His closest rival in the poll was Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, who had 20 percent support, down from 28 percent in December.

Obama, a Democrat, leads all of the Republican candidates in the race. The steadying economy helped push him up to 48 percent support in the poll compared to 43 percent for Romney, a margin of five percentage points.

The Republican front-runner is gaining on Obama, however. In December he trailed the president by an eight-percentage-point margin in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

HDMI dongle IPTV device supports Android 4.0

Always Innovating announced a tiny open source, IP set-top box (STB) that runs Android 4.0 on a Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor clocked as high as 1.8GHz. The HDMI Dongle plugs directly into a TV's HDMI port, and provides up to 1GB of RAM, a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a remote control that offers NFC, accelerometers, and voice control.

Developed by Always Innovating, the company that introduced the Linux-based, open platform Touch Book and Smart Book products (see farther below), the HDMI Dongle is similar in concept to the Roku Streaming Stick announced last week. Like Roku's device, the HDMI Dongle packs IP STB functionality in an HDMI dongle the size of a USB flash stick.
?

There are several key differences, however. While the Roku device supports the company's own video-dedicated Linux stack, the HDMI Dongle provides a full Android 4.0 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") experience, complete with web browsing, video watching, and games, says Always Innovating. In addition, like earlier Always Innovating products, the device is fully open source, and also supports Angstrom and Ubuntu flavors of Linux, says the company. The device is also said to be "technically compatible with Google TV."

HDMI Dongle, Android 4.0 interface
When Roku's device ships this fall, it will be available as a consumer product, while also being bundled with selected TV sets, starting with a Best Buy Insignia model. The HDMI Dongle design, on the other hand, is being licensed as an OEM product, and is expected to appear starting this summer.

Also, the Roku device adopts the new MHL (mobile high-definition link) technology, letting it draw power directly from the HDMI port. The Always Innovating HDMI Dongle is instead powered by connecting a short USB cord into a TV's USB port, if present.

The HDMI Dongle thus has the advantage of being able to plug into any TV or display device with both HDMI and USB ports, as opposed to the more selection of TVs with MHL-compliant HDMI ports. Presumably, a separate power adapter would be made available for plugging into a TV without a USB port.

Indeed, alternate power supplies and many other options would appear to be possible, as the HDMI Dongle's printed circuit board (pictured above) can be built into a variety of form factors, according to Always Innovating. An expansion header can interface to a camera, as well as to an LVDS screen supporting up to 1920 x 1080 resolution, says the company.

The HDMI Dongle is based on the Texas Instruments Cortex-A9 OMAP 4 processor, clocked from 1GHz to 1.8GHz depending on the configuration, says Always Innovating. This would suggest the device supports the earlier 1GHz OMAP4430 or OMAP4460 (formerly called the OMAP4440), as well as the new 1.8GHz ready OMAP4470.

The HDMI Dongle can stream and decode 1080p H.264 video, and is compatible with services such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon video-on-demand, says the company. The device is also said to ship with 256MB to 1GB of RAM.

Whereas the Roku Streaming Stick appears to be limited to Wi-Fi in addition to the HDMI port, the HDMI Dongle offers those features as well as a microSD card and Bluetooth, says Always Innovating. All these features, as well as the available camera interface and "battery management," lend themselves to mobile tablet versions of the device.

HDMI Dongle remote
When the dongle -- or tablet -- is plugged into a TV, however, one can use a supplied nine-button remote control that supports voice recognition. The remote control also features near field communication (NFC) connectivity for a "tap-to-share experience," says the company. In addition, the remote is said to provide accelerometers for motion-controlled gaming.

Touch Book and Smart Book

Always Innovating's flagship product was the BeagleBoard-based Touch Book, a Linux-ready, open source device announced in March 2009, with shipments beginning in August of that year. The Touch Book was a tablet that could be converted into a netbook by connecting to a keyboard -- an approach to device design that has since become fairly common.?

The company in 2010 followed up with a smaller, but somewhat similar, Smart Book mobile device (pictured). Built around a 1GHz Texas Instruments DaVinci DM3730 processor, the highly modular device could be bought as a mobile Internet device (MID) called the Mini Book, or as a tablet computer with the MID embedded in the back of the device, constituting a second, back-facing screen (right). This tablet/MID combination could then can be converted into a netbook by plugging it into a USB- and Bluetooth-enabled keyboard.

Availability

The HDMI Dongle design is available now to OEMs, says Always Innovating. The first HDMI Dongle product is expected to ship this summer, at prices ranging from $49 to $99. More information may be found at the Texas Instruments booth at CES this week in Las Vegas, as well as the Always Innovating website.

Is Robert Trivers Deceiving Himself about Evolutionary Psychology's Flaws?

In 1995, I critiqued evolutionary psychology in ?The New Social Darwinists,? an article in the December issue of Scientific American. Afterwards I got a scathing letter from Robert Trivers, whose work on altruism, parent-offspring conflict and other tendencies helped lay the foundations for evolutionary psychology, which like its precursor sociobiology attempts to explain human thought and behavior in Darwinian terms. Trivers called my article ?shallow? and accused me of ?acting out the old Scientific American?s long-standing inability to look at human sociobiology objectively.? I was annoyed at the implication that I was just parroting the magazine?s party line. And yet the letter stung, not because I agreed with Trivers but because I respected him; unlike some of the hacks who jumped on the Darwinian bandwagon, he is a truly original thinker.

I recalled that letter when I reviewed Triver?s book The Folly of Fools: The Logic of Deceit and Self-Deception in Human Life (Basic Books, 2011) for The New York Times. (I proposed ?Everyone Is Self-Deluded But Me,? as a headline for the review, but the Times went with the bland ?Why We Lie.?) I wanted to like the book, and I did. It?s a weirdly compelling hybrid of personal memoir and scientific treatise, which explores why we lie to others and to our selves. Natural selection, Trivers proposes, bequeathed us the gift of deception because it helped our ancestors do what they needed to do to propagate their genes, such as charming mates and tricking rivals. And we often deceive ourselves because those of us who are not sociopaths lie more effectively if we believe our lies.

I withheld one reservation about Folly. Trivers never really addresses an issue fundamental to any consideration of self-deceit. By what criteria do we decide that this person is fooling himself and that person isn?t? Or that we aren?t fooling ourselves? How can we distinguish truth from lies, or substantive claims from what the philosopher Harry Frankfurt calls ?bullshit?? This is the same puzzle that has plagued philosophers from Plato to Karl Popper. Popper asserted that scientists must constantly test their theories against reality, by gathering observations and performing experiments. But as Thomas Kuhn pointed out, scientists, being emotional as well as rational creatures, often become so committed to a theory that they refuse to acknowledge contrary evidence.

Trivers touches on these conundrums when he turns his attention to science. His judgment of scientists can be, well, scathing. Science has succeeded, he notes, because of ?a series of built-in devices that guard against deceit and self-deception at every turn,? and yet even scientists in the most rigorous disciplines are subject to, at the very least, an inflated self-image. Physicists ?talk of producing a theory of everything and make other grand claims, but their social utility, in my opinion, is connected primarily to warfare,? Trivers writes. ?Their major function has been to build bigger bombs, delivered more accurately to farther distances.? I disagree with that statement?just for starters, physicists have given us computers and a better understanding of the cosmos?but I get a kick imagining how some snooty physicists will react to it.

I agree with Trivers that scientists are especially prone to self-deception when they turn their attention to humanity itself. He proposes that ?the greater the social content of a discipline, the more slowly it will develop, because it faces, in part, greater forces of deceit and self-deception.? Trivers notes that social sciences can all too easily be corrupted by moral, political and ideological biases. He takes predictable swipes at psychoanalysis, which he calls a ?hoax,? and economics, which tends to be ?blind to the possibility that unrestrained pursuit of personal utility can have disastrous effects on group benefit.? Yes, our current recession demonstrates as much.

Trivers concedes that evolutionary biology has spawned some harmful notions. As an example, he cites the odious claim of the Nobel laureate Konrad Lorenz that a species will be more fit if only the strongest, most aggressive males mate with females.?Trivers nonetheless insists that the social sciences can only benefit from incorporating evolutionary theory and genetics. He is especially harsh toward cultural anthropology, which he accuses of having ?made a tragic left turn in the mid-1970s from which it has yet to recover (at least in the United States).??In other words, cultural anthropologists oppose biological accounts of human behavior for political rather than scientific reasons.

Actually, some cultural anthropologists, notably Clifford Geertz of Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton, sincerely believed that sociobiology and other biological theories fail to account for human malleability and cultural diversity and go too far in reducing extremely complex behaviors to innate impulses. Trivers himself indulges in this sort of theorizing when he claims, in Folly, that we have ?been selected to rape on occasion, to wage aggressive war when it suits us, and to abuse our own children if this brings some compensatory return benefit.?

He adds, ?I embrace none of these actions.? Well, I?m glad that Trivers doesn?t ?embrace? rape, war and child abuse, but I still have a problem with his assertion that these behaviors are innate. According to my reading, and that of many scientists, the evidence for his claim is not nearly as cut and dried as Trivers implies. For example, as I?ve argued in a previous column, the evidence strongly suggests that war is not a primordial instinct that we share with chimpanzees but a cultural innovation, a virulent meme that began spreading around the world about 10,000 years ago and still infects us.

Trivers is very hard on himself in Folly. He confesses to all manner of deceptions, intentional and inadvertent, that he has foisted on colleagues, wives, lovers, his children?and himself. But when he talks about science, he thinks that he is clear-eyed, and just knows how to tell truth from falsehood. Especially when he writes about evolutionary psychology and its critics, he?s all too confident in his ability to distinguish fools and knaves from sincere truth-seekers. This is a trait that he holds in common with other prominent proponents of evolutionary psychology, such as Leda Cosmides, John Tooby and David Buss. They love to accuse critics of ideological bias but fail to recognize it in themselves. I expected better of Trivers.

'Major emergency operation' after S.Sudan violence (AP)

JUBA, Sudan ? Aid groups are mounting a "major emergency operation" in rural South Sudan after tribe-on-tribe violence sent tens of thousands of people fleeing and killed an unknown number of people, the U.N. said Saturday.

The U.N.'s humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, Lise Grande, said aid groups are responding to a call for help from South Sudan's central government after a column of 6,000 armed men from the Lou Nuer ethnic group marched into Pibor in Jonglei state to target the Murle community in late December and early January.

The U.N. says that three whole villages were burned to the ground. Aid groups have evacuated 140 people who were wounded.

Neither the central government or the U.N. has been able to give a death toll. The Juba-based central government says it is launching an investigation. A government official in Jonglei has said that thousands of people were killed but that number has not been corroborated.

Aid groups estimated that 60,000 people have been affected by the violence, the U.N. said. Tens of thousands fled their homes and urgent needs include high-nutritional food, clean water, health care and shelter, the U.N. said.

"This emergency operation is going to be one of the most complex and expensive in South Sudan since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in 2005," Grande said, adding that most areas that need to be reached can only be reached by air. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement was the peace deal that ended decades of war between Sudan and South Sudan.

"Delivering assistance by air is hugely expensive compared to delivery by road. Unfortunately, in the areas affected in Jonglei, we don't have a choice," she said.

The Red Cross said earlier this month it was trying to reconnect 150 young children with their missing parents after tens of thousands of residents of South Sudan ran into the bush while fleeing the impending attack. Many of those parents are feared to be dead.

Columns of fighters from the Lou Nuer ethnic group marched into Pibor to target the Murle community, two tribes that have traded violent attacks over the last several years that have killed thousands. Much of the communities' animosity stems from cattle raiding attacks.

South Sudan fought a decades-long civil war with northern neighbor Sudan, a war that culminated in a 2005 peace deal that saw the partitioning of Sudan and the birth of South Sudan last July. The new border between the two countries remains tense, with sporadic cross-border attacks taking place. But the violence between the Lou Nuer and the Murle inside South Sudan is a reminder of the challenges the world's newest country faces inside its own borders.

Grande said that aid groups in South Sudan are overly stretched. Military operations in the states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile ? in Sudan, South Sudan's northern neighbor ? have forced 75,000 to seek refuge in South Sudan. In addition, aid groups are helping some 360,000 South Sudanese who have returned from Sudan since late 2010.

Iowa GOP voters see Romney as best Obama opponent (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won strong support Tuesday from Republicans seeking a candidate who can topple President Barack Obama in November's elections and from those most concerned about the weak economy, according to an entrance poll of GOP voters attending Iowa's presidential caucuses.

Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, countered with solid backing from tea party supporters, religious voters and those who ranked abortion as their paramount campaign issue.

Each candidate's reservoir of support helped explain a night in which Romney and Santorum were running neck and neck ? and ahead of their four other competitors ? in the year's first votes as Republicans started selecting their presidential nominee.

Running third was Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who scored highly with young voters, independents and people concerned about huge federal budget deficits.

Given a choice of four qualities they wanted in their party's nominee, about 3 in 10 said they wanted someone who could defeat Obama this fall. Forty-nine percent of that group said they were backing Romney, more than twice as many as cited any other candidate.

"I like Santorum's character and values. But I like Romney's experience and record," said Jeff Young, a salesman from Waterloo, Iowa, who said he was split between the two before Tuesday's caucus. "He's best-positioned in the most ways to compete with the other party."

Santorum, whose candidacy surged in recent days while emphasizing family and faith, was leading among those seeking a candidate with strong moral character, with 39 percent picking him. Santorum and Paul, a libertarian, were running about evenly among those who said they wanted a true conservative as their standard bearer.

Nearly 3 in 10 supporters of the conservative tea party movement were supporting Santorum, and about the same proportion of born-again or evangelical voters were also backing him. That gave Santorum a clear lead among both groups, important because each account for about 6 in 10 Iowa GOP caucus goers.

Santorum's recent burst of popularity was spotlighted by the entrance poll, which showed he was backed by a third of all voters who said they made their decisions in recent days ? more than any other contender.

Only about 1 in 7 voters said abortion was the issue that mattered most when they picked a candidate, but an overwhelming 57 percent of them were backing Santorum.

Asked the campaign's top issue, about 4 in 10 named the economy. Romney led among that group with support from about a third of them, underscoring the appeal of his background running an investment company before entering politics and his emphasis during the campaign on his business experience.

Romney entered the caucuses widely viewed as the favorite to ultimately win his party's nomination, and the opinions expressed by voters in Tuesday's entrance poll underscored his strengths and weaknesses in the GOP contests ahead.

Besides his perceived strength as an Obama opponent and among those worried about the economy, Romney was running ahead of his rivals among the 42 percent of Iowa caucus voters who were not born again or evangelical Christians. He was also doing well among those age 65 and up, people earning $100,000 annually or more and the 53 percent who said a business background was more important than government experience to be an effective president.

But only 56 percent of Romney's backers voiced strong support for him, a weaker show of enthusiasm than his other chief rivals. He was also running poorly among those considering themselves very conservative, the most ardent tea party backers and born-again and evangelical voters ? a crucial portion of GOP voters in South Carolina and some other states in upcoming nominating contests.

Paul had the backing of 48 percent of voters under age 30 and nearly as many independents, giving him large leads in both categories. That could be good news for Paul in New Hampshire, where independents represented almost 4 in 10 voters in that state's 2008 GOP presidential primary. Nearly a quarter of Iowa's GOP voters Tuesday were independents, up from 2008, so their proportion in New Hampshire might grow this year as well.

About a third of GOP caucus goers said they were most concerned about budget deficits, and 3 in 10 of them picked Paul, more than any of his rivals.

Romney, Santorum, Paul and Texas Gov. Rick Perry were running roughly evenly among one-fourth of voters who said campaign advertising played an important role in choosing a candidate ? a testament to the millions in TV advertising that blanketed Iowa in the weeks leading up to Tuesday's caucuses.

The survey was conducted for AP and the television networks by Edison Research as voters arrived at 40 randomly selected caucus sites in Iowa. The survey involved interviews with 1,737 caucus-goers and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The Fink?s Royal Rumble Memories: 1988-1992

The Royal Rumble has been one of WWE?s most unusual and unpredictable events. From what I would call the ?best seat in the house,? I?ve witnessed - and on many occasions introduced - a number of defining occurrences through the years. Therefore, as we celebrate the 25th edition of this long running WWE staple on Jan. 29, WWE.com revisits some of the magical moments that took place over the past 24 Royal Rumbles - some from the Royal Rumble Matches themselves, others?from clashes that took place in?the titularly named pay-per-view?event. Let's kick off?our journey with the first five, with more to follow next Wednesday.

1363575166001|01:18HACKSAW HANGS IN
1/24/88 - Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
The inaugural Royal Rumble was a made-for-TV event for the USA Network, highlighted by the Royal Rumble Match itself. Twenty Superstars entered the over-the-top-rope contest based on entry numbers drawn before the match began. The honor of victory that evening went to Hacksaw Jim Duggan, who stood tall after all was said and done.

?

1363588486001|01:11HOGAN'S SAVAGE MISTAKE
1/15/89 - Houston, Tex.
In its pay-per-view debut, one major element of the Royal Rumble Match saw the beginning of the dissolution of Hulk Hogan and ?Macho Man? Randy Savage, a.k.a. the Mega Powers. Tempers were short as a result of both Superstars? participation, but the intervention of Miss Elizabeth prevented an ugly situation from getting uglier that evening.

1/21/90 - Orlando, Fla.
There was no love lost between Rugged Ronnie Garvin and Greg ?The Hammer? Valentine. These two had their differences throughout 1989, and the culmination of their bitter rivalry took center stage at the 1990 Royal Rumble, in a Submission Match.

1363596084001|01:15SGT. SLAUGHTER?FELLS?WARRIOR
1/19/91 - Miami, Fla.
While conflict escalated between the U.S. and Iraq, Sgt. Slaughter, then an Iraqi sympathizer, challenged the Ultimate Warrior for the WWE Championship. Little did the Warrior know that anarchy would reign supreme this night, as ?Macho King? Randy Savage and Sensational Queen Sherri would play an instrumental part in costing him the coveted title.

1363539281001|01:17TURNABOUT IS FLAIR?PLAY
1/19/92 - Albany, N.Y.
All eyes were focused on the Royal Rumble Match, where for the first (and only) time, the WWE Championship was the prize that awaited the winner. After months of claiming to be ?the real World Champion,? entrant No. 3, Nature Boy Ric Flair, fought tooth and nail for nearly one hour to outlast 29 other competitors and become the new WWE Champion.

Griffin, Baylor win record-breaking Alamo Bowl (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? A thrilling, back-and-forth, record-shattering Alamo Bowl had barely ended when Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III already started hearing the chants.

"One more year! One more year!"

One more year? There's still the craziness of what happened Thursday night to get through first.

Griffin wasn't dazzling in possibly his last college game ? and didn't need to be ? yet No. 15 Baylor still pulled out an incredible Alamo Bowl victory in the highest-scoring regulation bowl game in history, beating Washington 67-56 in the wildest shootout of this bowl season or any other in memory.

If this was RG3's final showcase before jumping to the NFL, it was a gripping goodbye to watch. One of the nation's most electrifying players was upstaged by an even more exciting nail-biter that shattered the previous record for points in regulation set in the 2001 GMAC Bowl.

"We went out in style!" Griffin shouted to his teammates. He paraded the Alamo Bowl trophy around the field before taking it to the front row of the stands and his mother, who's already been looking at her son's NFL draft prospects.

Griffin said he was still catching his breath after this one.

"I want Baylor nation to enjoy this," Griffin said. "It's not about me. I've got about two weeks. I'll enjoy this the next day, and then the next day, and then I'll make it."

The previous bowl record for a regulation game was 102 total points set in the 2001 GMAC Bowl between Marshall and East Carolina. That game went to double overtime and ended with a combined 125 points ? which still stands as the overall bowl record.

Baylor, which won its first bowl game since 1992, and Washington (7-6) also set a bowl record for total offense in a game with 1,397 yards.

Griffin had an unremarkable night, throwing just one touchdown pass and running for another. But Terrance Ganaway starred ably in his place, rushing for 200 yards and five touchdowns. His last was a 43-yard run with 2:28 left to seal Baylor's first 10-win season since 1980.

Washington quarterback Keith Price outplayed his Heisman counterpart, going 23 for 27 with 438 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for another three scores.

"I think we'll have a hard time this bowl season to see a quarterback play as well as he did," Washington coach Steve Sarkisian.

Griffin was 24 of 33 for 295 yards ? and his only touchdown throw came on the game's opening drive.

Blown out in four other games against ranked opponents this season, the Huskies finally made one interesting. Not that it started that way after Baylor ran up 245 yards of offense alone in the first quarter ? awful even by the standards of Washington's defense, which is among the nation's worst.

Then the most award-winning QB in the country suddenly stopped looking like even the best one in the Alamodome.

Price, a sophomore who threw a school-record 29 touchdowns in his first year as the starter, began cutting into a 21-7 deficit with a 12-yard scoring strike to James Johnson. Seven minutes later he tied the game when Devin Aguilar somersaulted over the goal line after catching a 1-yard lob.

The overwhelming crowd of Baylor fans ? decked in green-and-gold Heisman shirts and armed with signs such as "Superman wears RG3 socks" ? stood in stunned silenced. That gave way to disbelieving gasps on the next series, when the typically sure-handed Griffin fumbled after getting popped by Andrew Hudson.

After that, it was practically a free-for-all of big plays.

A 56-yard touchdown dash by Chris Polk. An 80-yard touchdown catch by Washington's Jermaine Kearse two plays into the second half. An 89-yard scoring rumble by Baylor's Terrance Ganaway. Kearse again, catching and darting for 60 yards before getting dragged down, setting up Price's fourth touchdown toss the next play.

Back and forth, back and forth. One after another. In all, five plays covered 50 or more yards, three of them for scores.

"That was crazy," Baylor coach Art Briles said.

For an Alamo Bowl short on drama and light on matchups in recent years, it was a thrilling scoring spree that overshadowed the mere novelty of featuring the Heisman winner. And that in itself was a rarity for a bowl of this stature: Not since Ty Detmer took BYU to the Holiday Bowl in 1990 had a Heisman winner played in a bowl before New Year's Day.

Plenty came to see this one.

Anticipating a surge of Heisman gawkers, Alamo Bowl officials added 800 temporary seats and opened up others with obstructed views that required ticket-buyers to sign a form acknowledging the poor sightlines. Those seats sold, anyway, and the announced attendance of 65,256 was the fifth-largest in the bowl's history.

Others had better seats.

That includes Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland, who kicked for Baylor in the late 1980s but was here on business scouting Griffin in case the fourth-year junior enters the draft. Griffin's parents, two sisters and fiancee watched the nail-biter with front-row seats.

Griffin acknowledged this week his parents are looking at his draft prospects but denies having any substantial talks with them.

Win or lose, it was an impressive finale for Washington after stumbling into the postseason losing four of its last six. Particularly against a ranked team after then-Top 25 opponents Nebraska, Stanford, Oregon and USC all crushed the Huskies by an average of 24 points.
