Review: The Tannahill Weavers @ Wade Street Church

Feb 15, 2013 by Ben Macnair

With their well-honed stage show, harmony vocals and road-tested collection of traditional folk songs and instrumentals, the Tannahill Weavers turned Wade Street Church into an intimate folk club.

The Tannahill Weavers

The Tannahill Weavers

With founder members Roy Gullance on guitars and vocals, Phil Smillie on flute, vocals and bodhran, and newer members Colin Meliville on bagpipes and John Martin on bass vocals and fiddle, their melodic music ? steeped both in tradition, and with an open ear for newer musical strains ? has meant that the band have gained and maintained a loyal following since their first album was released in 1976.

A number of songs and instrumentals were featured, along with humour about Scotland and the life of a touring musician, while a lot of songs ? with audience participation ? meant that it was a more involving experience than might have been the case.

The Final Trawl was a fine song about the dangerous life that fishermen face, while Are You Sleeping Maggie? was a well-received love song.

The transportation ballad Jamie Rayburn?s Farewell to Glasgow was a showcase for the group?s well thought out vocal harmony arrangements, while The Geese in the Bog/ Jig of Slurs allowed the band to show off their instrumental dexterity.

Annislecht was an upbeat instrumental and Gloomy Winter is Now Away saw the band add their music to the poetry of Robert Tannahill, from whom they took their name.

An encore of Auld Lang Syne with a radically re-worked tune, revealing the melancholia and warmth of Robbie Burn?s words, may not have been in keeping with the time of year, but it was a fitting note on which to end this concert from one of Scotland?s foremost traditional groups.

iTooch Elementary School | Best Apps for Kids : reviews, news and ...

iTooch Elementary School provides practice for language arts, math, and science concepts in grades three through five, as well as fifth grade Health. There are ten packages of subject- and grade-specific questions that can be tested for free on two levels, and expansion packs that can be acquired as in-app purchases to add additional levels of difficulty and new concepts in each area. Every item offers a problem with hints explaining the concepts and multiple choice questions to assess student mastery.

Features include:

  • Based on National Common Core Standards
  • Virtual blackboard for notes and diagrams
  • Game Center Integration
  • Thousands of problems available as in-app purchases
  • Lessons for each concept included

?

iTooch Elementary School offers comprehensive practice in language arts, science and math at grades three through five, as well as practice with fifth grade health if users can purchase all of the relevant modules. Additional question sets are $4.99 each. Questions are well-written and the lessons provided are informative and clear.

Users do need to be aware that some questions and information extends beyond the active window and there is no indication that some content is hidden unless the user touches the screen. The scroll bar is only visible when the screen is touched. An inexperienced user might miss important information if they were unaware of how to produce the scroll bar when needed. Also, there is no confirmation of selections on the test, so students who are careless, or those with motor impairments can accidentally choose an incorrect response and have that affect their score.

iTooch Elementary School offers over a hundred sample questions with the free version of the modules on the app, and thousands more with purchase of additional modules grouped by grade level and curriculum area. Teachers can also design and submit their own question sets to add to the library. Each section offers a lesson over relevant concepts as well as a practice and a test mode. Practice mode is untimed, while test mode allows about one minute to respond to each item. There seems to be no way to turn the timer off for students who need that, so that feature would be a nice addition. The app does keep accuracy and usage records for a single user and can be reset to accommodate the next student.

The lessons are clear and well-designed to address the Common Core Standards. Examples are included. The questions are also well-written, and assess the CCS in a number of different formats, including multiple choice, fill-in and highlighting formats. There is a virtual blackboard for drawing diagrams or taking notes, as well. Teachers and parents can easily get sample questions for free to decide if the grade and subject matter is a good fit for their students.

There are three types of Progress Reports: task completion, percentage scores, and letter grades. Users can choose which type of report is generated. One drawback is that the app can only keep records for one user at a time. This makes it somewhat limited for classroom use.

iTooch Elementary School is not as flashy with its rewards for accurate work as some applications for this age group, but the small animations of the mascot character are engaging and varied. The app does connect to the Game Center for more competition among users, but this may or may not be a desirable feature depending on the rules for connection to the broader world. It would be nice to have a way to disable the Game Center feature if the adult mentor did not want a child to access it.

Users can unlock awards and achievements throughout the application as they make progress through the tasks. The animated mascot is very entertaining, and gets increasingly funny as new levels are attained. Learners will also appreciate the interactive nature of this application, with its instant feedback and visual presentation style.

The free version of iTooch Elementary School will provide users with a comprehensive experience that is more than enough to assess if the software is right for the situation. It is good that users can sample curriculum at all levels and subjects, and nice to be able to try out the game itself to see if it appeals to the learners. Once users have purchased the libraries they would like, there are literally thousands of questions and dozens of concept lessons to use. iTooch Elementary School is fun and educational.

Additional modules are priced at $4.99 per subject at each grade level. To purchase an entire grade level of questions will cost about $15 for third and fourth grade, and $20 for fifth grade.

This program contains no outside advertising. It does have optional in-app purchases of modules of questions for the library, as well as connection to the Game Center. These features may be troublesome for younger users or those who need more guidance in such matters. There is also an option (in the Setting section) to provide feedback on individual questions to the authors. It would be better if these connections to the outside electronic world were more difficult to access, and users will need to supervise students, especially at the younger ages.

Iran airs images allegedly extracted from US drone

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's state TV has broadcast footage allegedly extracted from the advanced CIA spy drone captured in 2011, the latest in a flurry of moves from Iranian authorities meant to underline the nation's purported military and technological advances.

Iran has long claimed it managed to reverse-engineer the RQ-170 Sentinel, seized in December 2011 after it entered Iranian airspace from the country's eastern border with Afghanistan, and that it's capable of launching its own production line for the unmanned aircraft.

After initially saying only that a drone had been lost near the Afghan-Iran border, American officials eventually confirmed the Sentinel had been monitoring Iran's military and nuclear facilities. Washington asked for it back but Iran refused, and instead released photos of Iranian officials studying the aircraft.

The video aired late Wednesday on Iranian TV shows an aerial view of an airport and a city, said to be a U.S. drone base and Kandahar, Afghanistan. The TV also showed images purported to be the Sentinel landing at a base in eastern Iran but it was unclear if that footage meant to depict the moment of the drone's seizure.

In addition, the TV also showed images of an Iranian helicopter transporting the drone, as well as its disassembled parts being carried on a trailer.

In another part of the video, the chief of the Revolutionary Guard's airspace division, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, said that only after capturing the drone, Iran realized it "belongs to the CIA."

"We were able to definitively access the data of the drone, once we brought it down," said Hajizadeh.

He described the Sentinel's capture as a huge scoop for Iran, saying that at the time, Tehran did not rule out a possible punitive U.S. airstrike over the drone.

Iranian officials have accused the U.S. of stepping up its espionage activities against Iran as part of intensified Western efforts to force Tehran to abandon its uranium enrichment program, a key aspect of its disputed nuclear program. The U.S. and its allies suspect Iran may be trying to develop atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

In an attempt to embarrass Washington, Iran has claimed to have captured several American drones, most recently in December, when Tehran said it seized a Boeing-designed ScanEagle drone ? a less sophisticated aircraft ? after it entered Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf.

U.S. officials said there was no evidence that the latest claims were true.

Also Thursday, the semi-official Fars news agency published photos reportedly depicting a domestic production line of ScanEagle drones. The photos show several drones in a workshop.

Iran has said before that it's making ScanEagle copies and putting them into service, but has not offered proof for those claims.

Fars also quoted deputy defense minister, Mohammad Eslami, as saying that Iran has also established a "production line for the drones in foreign countries." He did not elaborate, and it was not clear if he was referring to Syria or Lebanon's Hezbollah group, Iran's top regional allies.

The latest Sentinel footage came as the U.S. tightened sanctions to pressure the Iranian government to limit its nuclear program and restrictions on institutions that Washington says are stifling political dissent and censoring speech.

Among the expanded measures announced Monday by the Treasury Department is a move to deny Iran access to revenue garnered from its oil exports. Under the latest sanctions, Iran would only be able to use revenue from its oil sales in a country that purchased its crude ? now mostly big Asian economies such as China and India ? which would significantly limit its access to the money.
