LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Holly Madison, the blonde burlesque performer who worked at Playboy and on reality TV before starring in a Las Vegas Strip show, says she'll be adding a new title to the resume ? mom.

The 33-year-old star of "Peepshow" told Us Weekly she's 12 weeks into her pregnancy. Her boyfriend of nine months, Pasquale Rotella, issued an enthusiastic statement Wednesday.

"Holly and I are so excited to announce that we are going to be parents," said Rotella, who is CEO of Insomniac Events, organizers of the Electric Daisy Carnival rave. "We're in love and counting down the days until we meet our beautiful baby. I can hardly believe how lucky I am."

In May, Madison announced she would finish her run with "Peepshow" at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on Dec. 30.

Show officials say tickets are still available through the end of the year, but they're working with Madison to determine how much of that time she'll be performing in the lead "Bo Peep" role.

"The producers of 'Peepshow' couldn't be happier for Holly as we know she has had a long desire to become a mother," show officials said in a statement, adding that they'll be making a casting announcement soon.

"Peepshow" debuted in March 2009, with Madison taking the lead in June of that year.

Madison previously worked at Playboy and dated the magazine's creator, Hugh Hefner. She's also known for her role in the reality show "The Girls Next Door."

I was stoked to hear today that one of my favorite towns, Ft. Collins, Colorado, will begin changing its zoning laws to accommodate urban farming. This news is just one of several urban farming items to come up on my radar this week. Entrepreneur recently profiled two very successful urban mushroom growers who sell both mushrooms and grow-it-yourself kits to Whole Foods. They ?run the operation from a 10,000 square foot warehouse in Oakland. The phenomenon of urban farming also has its own book now.

Here?s a free tip for urban farmers, especially the ones that farms sustainably. Since the vast majority of you will be growing food on land leased from a municipality, you will find that your new urban landlord has very little experience with the business of agriculture. They will offer you a highly marginalized piece of land, which probably has buried tires, glass, and chunks of concrete embedded in it. They will expect you to magically, profitably ?turn this land into a high-yield, biodynamic community resource and offer you a one-year lease to make your money back and your dreams come true.

If you are an urban farmer, a one-year lease is for suckers. By all means, discard the trash, enrich and rehabilitate the soil. Grow something delicious and make friends with the neighbors. But always be cognizant that your rehabilitative efforts constitute a transfer of wealth from your time and labor into the earth of your municipal landlord. Make this value known during the negotiation process. Insist that your business plan depends on a multi-year lease which will allow you to recoup the rehabilitative expenses you have made in year one. If you are an exceptionally good negotiator, you will be able to persuade the city that the improved soil quality that you leave behind at the conclusion of your term is equivalent to the same type of wealth transfer that would occur if you were to leave behind any other piece of infrastructure, like irrigation. Argue that this transfer of wealth justifies a handsome rent rebate.

First lady announcing new hiring push for vets

WASHINGTON (AP) ? First lady Michelle Obama is traveling to the electoral battleground of Florida on Wednesday to announce that 2,000 businesses around the country have hired or trained more than 125,000 military veterans and spouses in the past year, exceeding a White House goal of 100,000 by the end of next year.

Buoyed by those numbers, Mrs. Obama planned to announce that the same companies have committed to hire or train an additional 250,000 veterans and military spouses by 2014, the White House said. That includes hiring or training 50,000 military spouses within three years ? and helping them keep those jobs as families move from one duty station to another.

"More and more businesses are recognizing that hiring veterans is good for their bottom line, and they are making bold commitments to bring veterans into their ranks," said Brad Cooper, executive director of the first lady's Joining Forces effort.

Mrs. Obama planned to announce the new commitments at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville. She was to be joined by Vice Adm. Scott Van Buskirk, chief of naval personnel.

In April 2011, the first lady and Jill Biden, wife of the vice president, launched Joining Forces to encourage Americans to support military families and veterans. The White House said the hiring push has helped to reduce unemployment among veterans from 8.6 percent in July 2011 to 6.9 percent last month.

Labor Department statistics show the unemployment rate for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is at 8.9 percent, above the national rate of 8.3 percent. For veterans under 24, the unemployment rate was 19.9 percent in July.

Heineken earnings hit overshadows Tiger bid success

SINGAPORE/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Higher input costs and weak European sales depressed Heineken NV's earnings in the first six months, overshadowing its promise of a better second half and a minor success in its battle for control of Asia's Tiger beer.

The world's third-largest brewer suffered a 4 percent decline in first-half net profit before one-offs on a like-for-like basis, against market expectations of growth, hit by rising production costs, weakness in Europe and investments in Africa.

Heineken said beer drinking would stay subdued in western Europe in the second half, underlining its need for scale in faster-growing markets such as southeast Asia where it is battling for control of Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) .

Heineken raised its stake in APB to about 44.6 percent after buying shares which sources said were from Singapore's Temasek Holdings and other shareholders, underlining its resolve to fend off rival Thai Beverage .

The Dutch company, a co-owner of APB since 1931, is seeking control of the Singapore-listed company to gain a larger slice of one of the last beer markets that is still growing rapidly and is not yet dominated by a global brewing group.

Heineken Chief Executive Jean-Francois van Boxmeer told a conference call on Wednesday that the Heineken and Tiger brands had taken off in southeast Asia in the past 15 years.

"This is the most rapidly growing area with the strongest demographics and strongest economic growth in Asia and we deem that a strategic interest for us," he said.

Big brewers have sought to boost volumes in emerging markets and steer developed world drinkers to pricier beer. Heineken is among the most reliant on the stagnant European market, which contributed 60 percent of its revenue and 40 percent of operating profit in the first half.

Heineken's first-half operating earnings fell in both western and eastern Europe, but grew in other regions. Cold, wet weather in northern Europe meant far lower sales of thirst-quenching lager.

Group net profit before one-offs dropped to 705 million euros, at the bottom of the 703-789 million euro range in a Reuters poll of eight banks and brokerages, for which the average was 737 million.

TIGER FIGHT

Heineken shares were 2.5 percent lower at 11:10 a.m. British time, making them among the weakest performers in the FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of leading European stocks.

The company pushed into Mexico in 2010 and has now set its sights on control of markets including Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, even if it was only stirred into action by Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi.

Charoen, owner of Heineken rival Thai Beverage , has in the past month built up a stake of 26.4 percent in Fraser and Neave (F&N) , the Singapore holding company whose joint venture with Heineken controls APB.

Heineken has bid S$7.94 billion ($6.4 billion) for F&N and for all of the APB shares held by others. F&N's board has approved its $53 per share bid, but must win backing from shareholders, which also include Japan's Kirin .

The Dutch brewer also has to prevent Kindest Place, owned by Charoen's son-in-law, from building its 8.6 percent stake in APB to 10 percent, a level that could prevent Heineken from delisting APB.

By buying Temasek's holding, Heineken has kept it out of the hands of its Thai rivals.

Buying Temasek's small stake is just another step Heineken is taking to strengthen its grip on APB and to "prevent the Thais from throwing another spanner into their plan," said Andy Sim, an analyst at DBS Vickers in Singapore.

The $53 per share offer announced by Heineken on Friday has placed the spotlight back onto Charoen, Thailand's second-richest man, and Kindest Place, which offered to buy F&N's direct stake of 7.3 percent in APB for S$55 a share.

APB shares were flat at S$53 while F&N shares fell 1 percent to S$8.27.

Republican lawmaker skinny-dipped on Israel trip-aides

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of Republican lawmakers and staff jumped into Israel's Sea of Galilee last year after a night of dining and drinking, and one freshman congressman swam naked, Republican aides confirmed late on Sunday.

The incident, first reported by Politico on Sunday, was investigated by the FBI and led Republican leaders in the House of Representatives to reprimand the 30 lawmakers on the privately funded trip.

Representative Kevin Yoder stripped naked before jumping into the Sea of Galilee after dining and drinking at a waterside restaurant in the town of Tiberias, Politico reported, citing more than a dozen sources, including eyewitnesses. Other participants, including the daughter of another congressman, swam fully clothed, while some lawmakers partially disrobed, Politico reported.

Two senior Republican aides who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the report's accuracy. Yoder's office was not immediately available for comment.

Politico quoted Yoder as saying in a statement about the incident that he and his wife, Brooke, joined some colleagues for dinner.

"After dinner I followed some members of Congress in a spontaneous and very brief dive into the sea and, regrettably, I jumped into the water without a swimsuit," Yoder said in the statement.

"It is my greatest honor to represent the people of Kansas in Congress and (for) any embarrassment I have caused for my colleagues and constituents, I apologize," the statement read.

The August 2011 trip was sponsored and paid for by the American Israel Educational Foundation, which is affiliated with AIPAC, an influential pro-Israel advocacy group.

Representatives Steve Southerland, Tom Reed, Ben Quayle, Jeff Denham and Michael Grimm were among the more than 20 lawmakers and staff that jumped into the Sea of Galilee, Politico said.

Senior aides to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy also went swimming in the freshwater lake, which is where Christians believe that Jesus walked on water.

Rapper Juvenile arrested after Fla. club fight

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Rapper Juvenile has been arrested on disorderly conduct charges after police responded to a fight at a nightclub in Miami Beach's Fontainebleau Hotel.

A Miami Beach police report says the 37-year-old star was in the middle of a fight that broke out early Monday at the hotel's Club Liv. The report says it's not clear what actions were taken by the rapper, whose real name is Terius Gray.

The report says the fight spilled out to the front of the hotel and involved about 100 people. Many were yelling and pushing and shoving each other but no injuries were reported. It's not clear what started the fight.

Corrections officials said Gray, of Slidell, La., was jailed on $500 bail. An attorney was not listed on jail records.

Wildfires blaze across U.S. West, threaten Idaho towns

SALMON, Idaho/CLE ELUM, Washington (Reuters) - Wildfires roared out of control across the sun-scorched U.S. West on Wednesday and threatened to engulf two small towns in Idaho as firefighters managed to partially dampen a monster blaze that has destroyed more than 60 homes in Washington state.

All told, the fires have blackened more than half a million acres across Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California, destroying homes and outbuildings, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate ahead of the flames and killing a young firefighter.

In Idaho, authorities told some 1,000 residents around the south-central communities of Featherville and Pine to prepare for evacuation as a blaze that has consumed more than 63,000 acres raged just miles from the two towns.

"We're adopting a posture that it's not if it's going to hit Featherville and Pine, but when," Elmore County Sheriff's Office spokesman Gary Walker said, adding that the early warning was designed to prevent "a big, mass confusion once we have to get people out of there."

The Trinity Ridge fire that menaces Featherville and Pine erupted after a utility terrain vehicle caught fire on August 3. Strong winds sent flames racing across parched grasslands and sagebrush and into tinder-dry pine forests, federal fire information officer Brandon Hampton said.

The blaze was 5 percent contained, and roads to the two high mountain desert towns about 50 miles southeast of Boise have been blocked to everyone except residents and firefighters.

"The prediction is it's going to burn until we get a weather pattern that brings a season-changing event, a substantial amount of snow or rain," Hampton said, adding there was a high probability that the fire would make a run into the towns over the next two days.

Wildfires have consumed roughly 6 million acres across the nation so far in 2012, above the 10-year average of 4.9 million acres, figures from the National Interagency Fire Center show.

In Washington state, firefighters battling the destructive Taylor Bridge Fire tearing through grasslands and wooded areas between the towns of Cle Elum and Ellensburg were aided by a shift in winds and said they hoped to have a quarter of the blaze under control by Wednesday evening.

'IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD'

Incident commander Rex Reed said Wednesday marked "a good day" for firefighters working against a blaze that has already gutted 60 homes and a number of other structures since it erupted on Monday afternoon at a construction site near Cle Elum, about 70 miles southeast of Seattle.

But thick smoke still hung over Cle Elum, and Reed said officials worried that winds that died down overnight could shift again and drive flames north into the Wenatchee National Forest or east toward farm communities.

"I don't know if our house is still there," said Victoria English, 30, as she sat at a fruit stand along Interstate 90 southeast of Cle Elum. "It doesn't look good."

Other residents with houses threatened by the fire stayed behind, determined to protect their homes as best they could.

"I just remodeled the back of my house," said Brian Ebinger, who watered his lawn while smoke from the 22,600-acre fire rose from the nearby hills. "I ain't going to give up that easy."

LIGHTNING SPARKS FIRES IN CALIFORNIA

In California, 8,000 firefighters battled wildfires up and down the state that forced the evacuation of three southern California communities, closed parks and campgrounds, and threatened homes and a major power-transmission line.

In northern California, firefighters had largely contained two fires that had burned a combined 8,000 acres and threatened hundreds of homes and a clothing-optional hot-spring resort in Lake County.

In San Diego County, five lightning-sparked fires charred some 9,000 acres in and around Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The nearby communities of San Felipe and Ranchita had to be evacuated, along with the park's campground, Riverside County Fire spokeswoman Blanca Mercado said.

Just over the hill in Riverside County, a blaze that started Tuesday burned 3,000 acres and destroyed four structures, prompting sheriff's deputies to order 47 homes evacuated, Riverside County Fire spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.

Since Sunday, California's biggest fire, ignited by lightning, had burned nearly 100,000 acres and threatened a major natural gas line and transfer station as well as power transmission lines that supply the Reno area, said Deb Schweizer, a fire information officer.

Ryan welcomes a Medicare debate

OXFORD, Ohio -- Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan weighed into the ongoing debate over Medicare at a public rally here Wednesday, inviting a public argument about the future of the program.

"The president, I'm told, is talking about Medicare today," Ryan told supporters at Miami University, where he graduated from college. "We want this debate. We need this debate. And we will win this debate."

That "debate" so far has been a messy one, keeping independent fact checkers busy ever since Ryan proposed a plan in 2010 to restructure Medicare into a system that provides subsidies to seniors to buy health care on the private market.

Democrats have seized on Mitt Romney's decision to choose Ryan as a running mate, arguing that the budget plan he proposed as House Budget Committee chairman would "end Medicare as we know it," a claim that a fact checking group rated the "Lie of the Year" in 2011. Meanwhile, Ryan repeated on Wednesday an attack that Romney has used regularly on the stump: that Obama "raided" more than $700 million from Medicare to pay for the 2010 federal health care law. That claim was rated "mostly false" by the same fact checking group, which pointed out that the health care law slows the projected growth of spending in the Medicare program in part by slimming the Medicare Advantage program and paying hospitals less for not meeting federal standards.

In his speech at the Miami University, Ryan also knocked Obama by using a toned-down version of a line Romney used earlier, accusing Obama of running a campaign of "hate."

"President Obama is out of ideas," Ryan said, "and that is why his campaign is based on anger and division."

India poised to launch its own Mars explorer

The Curiosity rover has barely settled into its new home, but may be getting some company soon as India now says it want to get into the Mars exploration business.?Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced today that the country is planning to send an unmanned probe into orbit around the red planet with a launch scheduled for next year. The country sent a similar spacecraft to the moon in 2008 and Singh also suggested it might send it's own lunar rover there as well.

Some might question?whether?a 4.5 billon rupee (around $82 million) space launch?makes?sense for a country that can barely keep its own lights on, though Singh also addressed the power issue in Wednesday's speech. But as Americans are well aware, politicians love making bold plans (especially in outer space) and talking about the future rarely hurts anyone.?Today is the 65th?anniversary?of India's independence from Britain, which explains the "dream big" theme of Singh's big speech.

Robot to be large enough to walk over cars

Researchers have begun building a drivable robot named Stompy that will have six legs and will be large enough to walk over cars. Moreover, they want to make it possible for robotics hobbyists to make one for themselves.

Besides the "wow" factor, the creation of Stompy is meant to make it technically possible and affordable for groups of non-experts to build giant robots,?according to Stompy's Kickstarter page. Its designers say they will hand out their diagrams.?

"The bigger goal is to encourage others to start building things on this scale and to enable people to build robots like this," said James Whong, one of Stompy's lead engineers. Whong is also a professional robotics researcher, although Stompy is not a project of his company or of any of his colleagues'.?

As the first of Stompy's legs is being welded together, Whong and his team are in the process of raising $65,000 for the steel and electronics that would finish the project. Those who donate $300 or more will get to ride in Stompy when it's finished, estimated to be next May, the team says. As of this writing, Stompy's builders were $3,005 from their goal.

When finished, Stompy will weigh two tons and will have a chassis with two seats, for a driver and a friend. It will run on a 135-horsepower engine that powers hydraulic legs that work much the same way forklifts or backhoes do.?

The machine monster is designed to be 10 to 100 times cheaper to build than comparable professional?robots, and its creators have promised that once they have their first design up and running, they'll release their diagrams, class lectures, computer codes and other materials for free.?Stompy's lead engineers are all Boston-area roboticists who have worked on projects such as robotic arms or U.S.?military-commissioned all-terrain bots. They unveiled their plans in the spring, when they started an adult-education class in Somerville, Mass., on the topic of building large robots.?

So far, the class has created the designs for low-cost, computer-controlled legs; a computer program to test Stompy virtually; and a full-size version of Stompy's engine. Team members started work on assembling and welding a full-size leg Aug. 12. [10 Animal-Inspired Robots]

The class's latest blog post shows one small way they're making Stompy and Stompy-like robots easier for non-experts to assemble. The metal pieces of one of the robot's thighs have tabs to hold the pieces together before welding.?

"Having the tabs makes assembly roughly a bajillion (technical term) times easier," M@ Dunlap, one of the students, wrote. "It's like assembling something from Ikea."?

To keep costs down, the team plans to use surplus hydraulic parts from companies that supply parts for backhoes and bulldozers, Whong told InnovationNewsDaily. Another major money-saver is the fact that everyone is donating his time to the project, instead of commanding the usual engineer salaries. "Right now, this is a labor of love and a passion-based project," Whong said.

If Stompy is funded and completed and its plans are released, people wouldn't necessarily need a background in robotics to make another Stompy, Whong said. However, "from a safety standpoint, some experience with heavy machinery is a must. These are very, very powerful actuators and can be extremely dangerous."

He's eager to see that Stompy isn't alone. "We want to see more big robots like this."

AP Source: Big East picks Aresco as commissioner

The Big East has hired CBS executive vice president Mike Aresco to be commissioner of the conference now in rebuilding mode, a person familiar with the decision said Tuesday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the conference was still working on an official announcement.

Aresco has been a vice president in charge of programming for CBS since 1996. He's handled the network's contract negotiations with the NCAA for the rights to the men's basketball tournament. He also negotiated CBS's 15-year deal with the Southeastern Conference.

The Big East is in transition and will begin crucial negotiations on a new television contract in September. The defections of longtime members West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse cost former Commissioner John Marinatto to lose his job earlier this year.

The website ajerseyguy.com, run by former Boston Globe reporter Mark Blaudschun, first reported the Big East had picked Aresco.

The Big East lost West Virginia, along with member-to-be TCU, to the Big 12 this year. Syracuse and Pittsburgh depart for the Atlantic Coast Conference next year. Temple rejoined the Big East on short notice this year to replace West Virginia.

Six new members are scheduled to join the Big East next year, including Boise State and San Diego State for football only, to create a coast-to-coast, 12-team football conference.

Also set to join the Big East in 2013 are Memphis, Central Florida, Houston and SMU.

Navy has committed to join the conference in 2015, and the Big East will eventually be in the market for another school to give it 14 football members when the Midshipmen join.

But up first is landing a TV contract. On Sept. 1, ESPN and the Big East begin a 60-day exclusive negotiating period. If they don't work out a deal, the Big East's media rights go on the open market.
