The New York daily news picked up the story and published this headline:

These were the messages getting passed all around the Internet, usually by people who clicked a ?retweet? or ?share? button and didn?t even read the entire research paper. But what did the study really tell us?

What?s better for fat loss: aerobics, weight training or both?

After reading the news blurbs, you might be ?led to believe that if your goal is fat loss, you should focus on aerobics like running or cycling, not resistance training. Although aerobics (aka cardio) is a proven way to help burn fat, I believe that saying, ?Aerobics alone is best? is sending the wrong message and taking us backwards into the dark ages of fitness.

After decades of being ignored or even shunned by the health and medical communities, and after an era of aerobics dominating the fitness scene, weight training finally got its due respect as a key element in a total fitness program, including for fat loss. ?In the strength and conditioning community, we were thrilled when institutions like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) finally added resistance training to their position statements.

We want to see that positive message continue to be spread widely to the public. Unfortunately, we still have researchers and the media running you around in circles: First recommending aerobic training only, then it was aerobics training plus resistance training, and now they?re saying it?s just aerobics again.

Confused? Trust me, they had it right at aerobics plus resistance training, especially when you look at the big picture and not just the body fat percentage alone. Strength training is the unsung hero in achieving total health and fitness.

Of course, the media loves stories like these because there is nothing better for getting attention than controversy and contradiction. While it?s important to keep an eye on new research and balance those academic findings with real world results, in this case, I don?t agree with all the conclusions of the study authors.

Study design

The study, known as STRIDE-AT/RT (Studies of a targeted Risk Reduction Intervention through Defined Exercise ? Aerobic and Resistance Training) was conducted at Duke University in North Carolina. In this randomized controlled trial, 211 test subjects were assigned to one of three groups:

1. Resistance training

2. Aerobic training, or

3. Aerobic plus resistance training

Aerobic training included treadmill, elliptical trainers or bicycle equivalent to 12 miles per week at 65% ? 80% of peak VO2. Resistance training included 3 days per week of weight training exercises for 3 sets of 8-12 reps. There was a ramp-up period with 1-2 sets during the first month. Exercises were not specified, but they covered all major muscle groups and workouts were supervised or confirmed.

These were the general findings:

  • All three groups lost fat mass
  • All three groups decreased body fat percentage
  • The aerobic training group lost more total body mass (body weight) than the other two groups
  • The resistance training group increased lean body mass more than the other two groups (confirmed by body composition and thigh circumference measurements)
  • The resistance training group did not reduce body mass. Weight went up slightly. (However, body fat went down slightly. The lack of decrease in scale weight was due to an increase in lean mass).
  • The resistance training plus aerobic training group decreased body fat percentage and fat mass more than the other two groups.

Looking at these results, it actually appears as though the resistance training plus aerobic training group had the best fat loss results: Similar total body weight loss as the aerobic only group, but greater loss in body fat percentage and greater loss in body fat mass.

The researchers seem to discount this fact by qualifying their ?aerobics is best? conclusion based on time efficiency or what they believed was the most important outcome for health benefits.

However, the truth is ? and even Duke?s own press release didn?t mention this ? when you read the full research paper and analyze the actual change scores, NONE of the results of ANY group were very impressive..

These were the specific findings, by the numbers:

  • The aerobics only group (deemed ?most successful?), lost a mere 3.8 pounds of body weight and 3.6 pounds of fat in 8 months.
  • The resistance training group gained 2.3 pounds of lean body mass and only .57 pounds of fat mass.
  • The aerobic plus resistance group lost 5.36 pounds of fat mass and gained 1.78 pounds of lean body mass. That looks like the winner to me for overall body composition improvement, but even that is nothing to write home about.

Suppose the press release had said, ?Study shows that aerobic training produces almost 4 pounds of fat loss in 8 months,? or ?Aerobic training burns three-tenths of a pound more than aerobics plus resistance training.? Do you think there would have been so many headlines? Well, those are the numbers! That?s exactly what happened! Why was there any buzz or hoopla about these study results at all?

With proper program design, shouldn?t you be able to lose a lot more than 4 pounds in 8 months? In fact, since this study was conducted on overweight and obese subjects, wouldn?t you have expected more weight loss than average? ?(Isn?t it common to see an obese person lose 4 pounds of bodyweight in the first week?) Regardless of your starting point, if your goal is fat loss, would you be happy with less than 4 pounds for 8 months of effort?

Why the poor results? There are many possible explanations.

For one, we don?t have that many specifics about the program design, progression or energy expended from the weight training workouts. And in the aerobic group, the volume of training may simply not have been enough.

Diet: The crucial (missing?) element

It?s possible to create a calorie deficit with ANY type of training program ? cardio or weights. However, is it possible to do aerobics and not have a deficit? Of course. Is it possible to lift weights and not have a deficit? Is it possible out-eat ANY training program? Of course.

The biggest question in my mind is why the researchers drew the conclusions they did: ?Here?s what they said, word for word:

?If increasing strength and muscle mass is the goal, a program including resistance training is required? (So far so good? we?re still cool)?

?However, balancing time commitments against health benefits accrued, it appears that aerobic training alone is the optimal mode of exercise for reducing fat mass.? (They conclude aerobics is optimal based on the results above? Really? Okay, now we have a difference in opinion).

I believe, and actually the absolute data seems to confirm it, that resistance training plus aerobic training together trumps either type of training by itself. The study authors themselves point out that each type of training has its own set of benefits. But apparently, factoring in the increased time commitment of doing both, they judged in favor of aerobics only as the preferred option for decreasing fat mass.

That raises yet another question: Should losing weight or even just losing fat be your only goal or your primary focus?

Weight training: Key to the world?s fittest, leanest, healthiest and most attractive bodies?

I?m not sure what is the background of the authors of this study. Some researchers have done purely academic work, others have a practical background in strength and conditioning. Here?s mine: I come from the trenches of a personal training and competitive bodybuilding career, with a degree in exercise science and I?ve held many personal trainer and strength coach certifications. So, I?m definitely partial to weight lifting and muscle-building as the best tool for transforming the body. However, I?m not a lone in my ?bias??

I?ve been surrounded by other professionals in the fitness trenches my entire life and I don?t know a trainer worth his salt (one who actually transforms other people?s bodies every day) who agrees that aerobic training should be the sole focus of a fat loss program or even that fat loss should be the sole focus of a health and fitness program.

Mind you, I?m not knocking aerobics ? not at all. I?m a big fan of including cardio as one part of the mix. That?s my whole point: It?s practically common knowledge among experienced trainers that better body composition is produced from combining weight training with cardio training.

There is a group of strength coaches and diet gurus today who insist that weight training combined with very strict diet is sufficient to produce fat loss. Surely that is true, but isn?t it also true that most people seem to get better results when adding cardio on top of weight training? Aren?t there ?endomorph? body types where weight training alone doesn?t seem to produce the ?fat loss/ weight loss results wanted at the rate they are wanted? Didn?t this study seem to bear that out? ?I can side with the researchers as far as that goes: Weight training alone may not be optimal for fat loss for most people. Put cardio into the mix.

I suppose a good question is how do we prioritize and allocate our time to each activity? Following the same rationale as the researchers ? balancing time commitments with health benefits ? shouldn?t weight training be higher in the hierarchy than aerobics? Shouldn?t an ideal program start with weight training plus nutrition as the core elements and then add cardio in to increase fat loss and conditioning as needed? That?s how I see it: Use both forms of training and get them into a hierarchy of importance relative to your goals and time available.

For those with real time commitment issues, it?s comforting to know that fat loss can be achieved just by dialing in the diet (being meticulous about caloric deficit), and that a calorie deficit can be achieved with any choice of exercise. In a perfect world, I?d have you doing all three, with that order of priority: Nutrition, weight training and cardio training.

The muscle and metabolism argument: Was this point overlooked?

Although this study had limitations and subjects had less than stellar results, it did have its strengths and it did raise some valid questions. I think a valid point was made in this research paper that may have been even more important than the part that made all the headlines. Nobody in the media or the discussions that ensued seemed to mention this. It was about the role of increasing lean body mass in helping with fat loss.

It has been widely believed and advertised for years, especially in the bodybuilding world, that if increasing lean mass increases metabolism, then increasing your lean mass will help yo lose weight. It has sometimes even been implied or stated directly that you can sit on the couch or sleep and (with your new muscle), you?ll burn more calories and lose more fat from that alone.

The Duke researchers suggested that if this were true, shouldn?t the resistance training only group have fared better in the fat mass lost department? They wrote:

?It may be time to seriously reconsider the conventional wisdom that resistance training alone can induce changes in fat mass due to an increase in metabolism.?

It?s well known that an increase in lean body mass leads to an increase in basal metabolic rate. Therefore, for years, we have promoted the idea that gaining lean mass helps with fat loss ? and it does to some degree. However, it doesn?t help so much that we can say increasing lean mass, by itself, is a great fat loss strategy. If you only gain a few pounds of lean body mass, the increase in metabolism is nothing to write home about. Without dietary control, it?s no help at all.

It seems to me that the researchers could have made this their primary conclusion. Instead, they said, ?Aerobics is better than weight training for fat loss.? ?That?s where I think they mixed up their message, because weight training does help with fat loss in the short term, directly and significantly, from increased calorie expenditure. But over the long term, not as much as we thought from increased basal metabolism.

Conclusions

Because the research is so inconclusive and opinions alway vary due to personal ideaologies, the weights versus cardio (and what kind of each) debates are likely to continue. But if you consider the entire body of research we have today on improving body composition, combined with the real world experience of the top trainers and athletes who are in the trenches, you can find it very easy to conclude that the optimal method of fat loss is a combination of cardio training and resistance training.

Is more time required to do both resistance and aerobic training? New Apps Launch as Social Casino Audience Declines | Social ...

playsino-myvegas-social-casinoSocial game developer/publisher Playsino has brought its multiplayer Bingo World HD app to Apple?s iPhone, following hot on the heels of the game?s iPad launch a week earlier. Playsino CEO Brock Pierce told Social Casino Intelligence the product was ?the most user-rich bingo game on iOS,? allowing users to play four cards simultaneously. Originally developed by Foghorn Games, which Playsino acquired in October, the bingo app?s back-end has been reconfigured to permit cross-platform play with Android and Facebook in the coming months.

myVEGAS, the Playstudios-powered social casino Facebook app launched by MGM Resorts, has added three-reel slot game New York-New York to its repertoire. The game involves a family of tourists attempting to hail a cab in Manhattan, helping a socialite rescue her lost poodle and getting caught up in a ?daring armored car heist.? We know the actual New York City recently had a milestone day in which not one single person was murdered, but frankly, we wish the app had opted for the 1970?s Big Apple depicted in movies like Taxi Driver. How much more ?daring? would it be if, whilst locating that socialite?s poodle, that family of tourists also had to rescue a teenage hooker from a slimy pimp?s clutches? Or would that be too real for the virtual crowd?

There?s no denying that the availability of social casino games has exploded this year, but research from Superdata shows the amount of people actually playing the games fell 8.5% from September to October. Revenue generated by US social casino players fell $11.5m over the same period. Much of that loss is attributed to Zynga Slingo shedding a whopping 15m users in October, which pushed the percentage of total social gaming attributable to casino games from 32.5% to 31%. Superdata CEO Joost van Dreunen suggested to GamaSutra that the dip was predictable, as players ?are probably saving their dollars for the holiday season? and thus October?s tally wasn?t necessarily the beginning of a trend. At least, one that won?t extend beyond January?

If you?re looking for evidence of continued social gaming growth, Superdata says look to Asia, where revenues have increased 28% in 2012 and are expected to top $5b by 2015. At the recent Social Gaming Asia Summit, Edelman China digital creative director Kestrel Lee contrasted the North American social gaming decline with the situation in China, where 45% of the country?s 125m social gamers spend money via online or prepaid payment methods and ?spending on mobile gaming is higher than Korea.?

Social gaming has undeniably benefited from a lack of restrictive regulations, and while Japanese authorities have demonstrated a willingness to rein in its social gaming companies, regulators in other countries have not yet followed their lead. But Belgium, which already boasts a blacklist of unapproved real-money online gambling operators, may soon add certain social gaming operators to the naughty list. Representatives of the Belgian Gaming Commission told attendees at last month?s World Regulatory Briefing that if a social game?s characteristics met the criteria of gambling ? a game played for stakes involving an element of chance ? then the BGC would be compelled to restrict such play to BGC-licensed operators. The key here would be whether virtual currency can be defined as ?stakes.? Or is all this just so the BGC can open a new front in its war with Bwin.party by targeting its fledgling social gaming division Win Interactive?

Cisco grabs for 'No. 1 IT company' crown

NEW YORK (AP) ? Cisco Systems Inc. isn't content to be the world's largest maker of computer networking gear. It says it wants to become the "No. 1" supplier of information technology to big businesses by broadening its offerings of services and software.

But when Cisco says "No. 1 IT company," it doesn't mean that it's going to be the biggest-selling company. That goal is out of reach, as IBM Corp.'s revenue is twice that of Cisco.

Rather, Cisco CEO John Chambers says he wants the company to loom largest in the minds of its customers and to be the one setting the pace in the industry. Being No. 1, he says, means having the best customer satisfaction and the best profit margins for products.

The strategy statement, articulated Friday at a presentation for Wall Street analysts, follows some lean years that have seen Cisco retrench from even broader goals, which included trying to establish itself as a consumer brand and buying a maker of camcorders. The new direction will be supported by a global advertising campaign with the slogan "Tomorrow starts here." The ad campaign starts Monday.

"The play sounds a lot like the IBM story," Raymond James analyst Simon Leopold said. After the maker of mainframe computers struggled in the 1980s with the rise of cheap microprocessors and rapid changes in the industry, IBM successfully transformed itself into a company that combined consulting services, software and hardware.

For Cisco, the new playbook comes as Chambers, who is 63 and one of the longest-serving CEOs in Silicon Valley, is nearing retirement and looking to hand over to a successor in two to four years. There are two chief candidates, who appeared with Chambers on Friday: Rob Lloyd, the head of sales and product development, and Gary Moore, the chief operating officer.

"Both Rob and I are prepared to be the CEO," Moore said, adding that whoever wasn't chosen would accept the board's decision and remain with the company.

Chambers told analysts that Cisco pulls in about $6 billion from software per year and plans to double that in the next three to five years. That's not a figure the company usually breaks out, as most of its software is deeply integrated into hardware such as routers and switches, which shunt data through networks.

Analysts at the meeting were unsure how to incorporate the figure into their models, and the company didn't give a lot of specifics on how it hoped to achieve that.

Analysts also questioned how Cisco hopes to be the top player when it doesn't sell the massive storage arrays that big companies need for their data. Chambers said Cisco will keep partnering with companies that do sell storage products, including IBM and EMC Corp.

Apart from IBM, Cisco's chief competitors for the "No. 1 IT" throne are Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp., SAG AG and Hewlett-Packard Co. Cisco partners closely with them, except for HP.

Chambers said the company is sticking to its forecast of growing sales by 5 percent to 7 percent per year and its earnings slightly faster, at 7 percent to 9 percent per year. Both figures represent pullbacks from the past two decades, when the San Jose, Calif., company often grew sales by more than 10 percent per year.

Cisco's stock fell 15 cents, or 0.7 percent, to close Friday at $19.33.

Its clear, fast user interface, leading tools for maintaining a clean, junk-free inbox, social-network integrations, and built in viewers for things like videos and documents were enough to earn it our Editors' Choice immediately. And we weren't alone: after less than four months since its release, Outlook.com attracted over 25 million users, and Microsoft found that 4 out of 5 testers said they'd dump Gmail for Outlook.com.

Since that release was actually designated a "preview," it's probably not a surprise that Microsoft has already updated the service based on feedback, as well as adding an Android app to the ways you can access your Outlook.com account. The new features, including an Archive button similar to Gmail's, more keyboard shortcuts, and more inbox customization, will start appearing in Outlook.com user's accounts over the next few weeks.??????

Users of Hotmail, which remains the world's largest webmail service and was our previous webmail Editors' Choice, will also benefit from Outlook.com's features: The update is being pushed to all users automatically, but there's still an option to switch back to the earlier Hotmail design. The new webmail design echoes that of Microsoft's major re-thinking of its flagship product, Windows 8.

You can get your own account at Outlook.com, with a new @outlook.com email address. Existing users of Hotmail, MSN Mail, and Windows Live Mail will still be able to sign up for new @hotmail, @live, or @msn account for a while. Eventually the new service will replace all of the earlier ones, though there's no scheduled date for that yet, and they'll still be able to keep their @hotmail addresses if they choose.

Outlook.com takes as its foundation all the work Microsoft has done in recent years on Hotmail. That includes vastly improved spam filtering, mailbox cleanup tools, a much speedier interface, and the ability to attach large files via Web storage using SkyDrive. This allows a single attachment size of up to 300MB, compared with Gmail's 25MB. On top of all that work, Outlook.com renovates the interface with a far more modern, minimalist look.

And it's not just the webmail service that changes: A dropdown next to the main icon in the interface offers access to other suite members, similar to the way Apple's iCloud Web apps do, with brightly colored Metro-style tiles. These include People, Mail, SkyDrive, and, eventually, Calendar, though the Calendar sub-site was not updated yet at the time of my testing. The integration between these services is much tighter, especially with the new Microsoft account, which will tie together not just these, but also will work with your Xbox Live account if you have one, and your Windows 8 PC's default apps.

The Inbox
The inbox has been designed for simplicity, clarity, and easier access to your mail. Customization becomes much more basic: you no longer get whimsical background theme choices, but you can choose a basic interface color. Microsoft has redesigned the smaller top frame so that there is more room for the messages. You do lose some customization with Microsoft's new webmail design, but as we've seen with Facebook, which offers zero customization, users just want a tool that performs the activity they're engaged in, without interface distractions. A recent update, however, offers more color options than the original preview did.

For many, though, the most welcome change from Microsoft's earlier webmail services will be the disappearance of display ads. And you won't see any ads at all when reading messages from your contacts. Nor does Microsoft scan the contents of your mail to target ads to you, as Google does with Gmail. Outlook.com is served via secured HTTPS, as Gmail is.

When reading mail from one of your contacts, instead of the text ads in the right-panel, you'll see one of your contact's images from a connected social network, including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, and you'll get the ability to view the contact's latest tweet, Facebook profile. This personalizes your email interaction, and gives you a view into what's going on with whoever it is you're writing to, too. You can also import all your contacts from any of these social networks or from Gmail.

Keyboard shortcuts can be configured under the Customizing Outlook section of Options. There are even settings that let you use Gmail or Yahoo Mail shortcuts, if you're more comfortable with those. The default mimics Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Web Access. One new very handy shortcut is /, which takes you to the search box. Similarly, Tab now takes you to the Send button when you're composing.

I do like how there's still a preview panel (something not offered in Gmail), but the divider that separates the inbox from the preview below isn't heavy enough. If, however, you use the side-by-side view, which is more in keeping with Windows 8's mail app, the preview panel looks a lot clearer. Or you can have no preview at all, if you prefer the Gmail way of doing things. When replying, you can now set the default to Reply All, and when you're done viewing a message, you can either view the next message or the inbox as a default setting.

Interface Advantages
Another interface advantage over Gmail Outlook.com offers is right-click menu choices for replying, forwarding, and so on. Right click in Gmail and all you'll get is your browser's default menu. Other helpers in Outlook.com called "Instant Actions" show up as icons next to a message's subject when you hover the mouse over it, letting you mark the message as read/unread, delete it, or flag it. The last action instantly moves the message to the top of your inbox.

Outlook.com offers a conversation view that's clearer than Gmail's, and unlike Google's mail service, Outlook.com will never present you with the predicament where the Send option isn't showing in the browser window while you're composing a reply. Outlook.com's inbox updates automatically and quickly, just like Gmail's. This used to be an advantage in Google's email, but, in several tests, a message sent to both services reached both at the same time; it even reached the Outlook.com inbox sooner in some cases. Another speeder-upper in Outlook is its optional email preloading. I'm not sure why you'd want to turn this off, for a slower inbox, but that choice is available to you.

Despite its vastly simplified interface, Outlook.com maintains all of Hotmail's slick integrations?photos, videos, and documents can all be viewed right in the inbox. That includes viewing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents without launching the Office app in question. The image viewer is a well-designed, black-framed affair, letting you play slideshows on-page whether the images were attached to your incoming email or simply linked to from a photo sharing site like Flickr.

You also get view options to just show mail from contacts, groups, newsletters, or social updates. And the Quick views choices along the left rail let you see just emails that include documents, photos, or shipping updates. And you can add your own custom categories to these.

Search is also well handled. As you type letters in the search box, any of your contacts' names that match appear, along with options below to search by From, Subject, and To fields. An advanced search option adds the ability to specify a date range, keywords, folder, and whether or not the message has attachments.

Outlook.com lets you add multiple inboxes from other services, including Gmail, and you can hook into your Exchange server if your business has one. As well as just reading mail from all the connected accounts, you can send from any of them within Outlook.com, simply by choosing your From address from a dropdown in the new mail view.
