Nokia's Asha outsells Lumia in Q3 2012 - News - Know Your Cell

Nokia's Q3 report is, to put it bluntly, ugly. Sales have dropped significantly across the board from the previous year, and the company's heavily advertised Lumia lineup didn't move as well as anticipated.?In fact, Nokia sold significantly more units of its low-end Asha phone than anything from its Lumia range.?

Lumia sales were at 2.9 million (down four million from the previous quarter), while Asha sales more than doubled that at 6.5 million units.?"In our mobile phones business, the positive consumer response to our new Asha full touch smartphones translated into strong sales," said Nokia's CEO, Stephen Elop in a company release.?

Nokia also reported a $754 million operating loss, and total smartphone sales were down 63 percent from the previous year. The company's gross cash capped off at $11.52 billion; net cash at $4.72 billion -- both representing a drop from the last quarter..

Elop chalked up Nokia's rough third quarter to it being a transitional period, stating, ?As we expected, Q3 was a difficult quarter in our Devices & Services business; however, we are pleased that we shifted Nokia Group to operating profitability on a non-IFRS basis. In Q3, we continued to manage through a tough transitional quarter for our smart devices business as we shared the exciting innovation ahead with our new line of Lumia products.?
